STRONG batting performances by two Ulladulla United juniors has guided ACT/NSW Country to a convincing bounce-back victory against Queensland on Wednesday.
After being knocked-out of the under 19 national championships in Tasmania by Western Australia on Tuesday, Matthews Gilkes and Tom Engelbrecht’s team responded in a big way.
At Queenborough Oval, the duo’s team decided to bat first in their plate match – posting the imposing score of 283 from their 50 overs.
Leading the charge was opener Gilkes, who smashed 83 from 78 balls – an innings which included 11 boundaries and two sixes.
Not to be outdone, Engelbrecht hit a quicker than a run a ball 50 (48 deliveries) in the middle of the innings, to help ACT/NSW Country post their large total.
In reply, Queensland finished at 252 from their 45.2 overs, with opener Max Bryant blasting 57 off 34 deliveries – his third 50-plus score for the tournament.
Spin bowler Engelbrecht finished with figures of 0/27 from his five overs.
The team will next play Victoria Country at Queenborough Oval on Saturday.
