Not one, but two national gold medals for Moruya’s Jaylah Hancock-Cameron.
Jaylah reached the 2017 national Australian All Schools Championships in Adelaide, and ran away with the 800-metres and 1500-metres titles. Both times were personal bests.
The event draws competitors from all over Australia. Jaylah was understated about her achievement.
“It felt pretty good,” she said.
“I’ve been to the championships before – in Canberra, last year – so this was my second time.
“I was more prepared this year.”
Prepared enough to walk away with two surprise PBs.
“In the 800m I did a 208.44, in the 1500 it was 428.01,” she said.
“I didn’t expect PBs, because the races are for medals, so it was a coincidence.”
Jaylah plans to continue running next year, after enjoying well-deserved summer holidays.
She was joined at the national titles by Asha Martin, who got sixth in her age group. The girls have competed at every level, from local to national, together.
At state level, Asha came 2nd in the 3000m, with a time of 10:30.98, and 3rd in the 1500m with a time of 4:42.69.
