Birdland Animal Park owner David Burnett said motorists could take simple steps when animals were hit by cars.
“If it the animal is dead, drag it off the road. Then check if it has a pouch with young,” he said.
Mr Burnett said orphaned young or injured animals were not likely to starve: “There is no panic to feed them”.
“Pick them up, make them a cosy bed, and put them in a cage. Then seek help from a professional,” he said.
Mr Burnett said professional animal rescue organisations were authorised to care for native animals, and his own centre was licensed for all aspects of animal care: “We have a very young orphaned wombat right now, brought in after its mother was killed on the road”.
