Tuross Head sculptor Terry Fuller unveiled the bronze statues at the Bridge Plaza courtyard, on Monday, December 11. He said the statues had been made with children in mind.
“They are strong,” Mr Fuller said.
“People can sit on them and kids can hang off them.”
The pelicans were commissioned to mark the Bridge Plaza redevelopment. Marketing manager Natalie Greenway said pelicans were symbolic of the Bay.
“The idea was to create a meeting place with sculptures which children could interact with,” she said.
“We didn’t want anything too abstract –they had to look real so the kids would recognise them.”
Ms Greenway said the addition of the pelicans completed the courtyard – for now.
“We like to think of them as a pair: Mr Pelican watching over Mrs Pelican, who is sitting on her eggs,” she said.
“Although there are no current plans, wouldn’t it be nice to have a row of baby pelicans in the future?”
