Tuross Head’s Tom Engelbrecht and Ulladulla’s Matthew Gilkes have enjoyed a successful start to their under 19s cricket national championships in Tasmania.
After their first match of the tournament against South Australia at Queenborough Oval was washed out on Monday, the pair’s NSW/ACT Country side had to wait until Tuesday to hit the crease.
At Ferguson Park, NSW/Country won the toss and sent rivals Northern Territory to the crease – where they made 139 from their 47.5 overs.
Engelbrecht finished with 2/31 from his 10 overs, including one maiden, and wicket keeper Gilkes had one catch and one run out.
In reply, Gilkes opened the batting for NSW/ACT Country and made 26 from 21 balls, including four boundaries and a six.
Engelbrecht, batting at number six, then chipped in a handy 14 from 28 balls, to help NSW/Country reach the target (6/141) in the 39th over.
The pair will next take to the field on Thursday, where they will battle Victoria Metro at Invermay Park.
