Fast fashion is fast becoming one of Australia’s biggest waste problems, with more than half a million tonnes of textiles and leather ending up in landfill each year.
Talented Eurobodalla locals are helping to combat the problem by transforming discarded items into catwalk- worthy, eco-friendly garments.
Their creations will be on show at Art on the Path this Sunday, October 1, which showcases the work of local artists and makers who use discarded materials in their creations.
Eurobodalla Council’s Environment Education Officer Bernadette Davis says Art on the Path is an opportunity for the community to rethink how they shop.
“At Art on the Path you will find talented locals revamping discarded fabric into one-off creations; vintage and retro fabrics transformed into irresistible one-off items. You’ll also find racks of second-hand clothes and reusable fruit and veggie shopping bags, so you can say goodbye to plastic bags as well.”
Eurobodalla Boomerang Bags will be there to hand out sewing kits and helpful hints on how easy it is to make sustainable choices, and Council’s environment team will bring their education trailer and information on local environmental programs, like the marine debris working group and Landcare.
“You will also be able purchase handmade creations by local artists who recycle discarded materials into new treasures,” Bernadette said.
“Rusting metal, wood, glass, tiles and fabric all make their way to Broulee’s Art on the Path. These potential landfill items are transformed into an array of artworks by talented locals with a passion for the natural environment.”
Art on the Path is held on the shared pathway on Coronation Drive, Broulee, opposite the general store, from 8am-12pm.
