Bermagui is one of 31 locations that will host the Melbourne Cup trophy tour in 2017.
The 18-carat gold cup, valued at $200,000, will arrive in town on Saturday, July 22, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) announced on Tuesday
Selected for its passion for racing and community spirit, Bermagui will join Nowra and 29 other cities and towns across Australia and New Zealand in the 15th annual Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.
Bermagui Country Club general manager Robert Beuzeville said they were thrilled to be part of the tour.
“Hosting this iconic trophy will be wonderful experience for Bermagui,” he said.
“Each year our town embraces the Emirates Melbourne Cup with the Bermagui Country Club holding a special Melbourne Cup luncheon where locals can celebrate ‘the race that stops a nation’.”
The tour will start on July 1 in the NSW town of West Wyalong, where the gold used by ABC Bullion to make the trophy is mined, before returning to Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.
Since its inaugural year, the Tour has travelled more than 494,000 kilometres and visited more than 377 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations, providing communities with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic of the Emirates Melbourne Cup first-hand.
Community members are encouraged to upload photos with the Cup to Facebook, using the hashtags #PeoplesCup and #EmiratesMelbourneCup, for the chance to win a trip for two to Flemington for the running of the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
