The newly-formed Bay Tigers girls rugby league side will hit the ground running later this month when they begin training for the Illawarra Rugby League competition.
After a strong 2016 which included strong performances for Bomaderry in the November 9s tournament, the girls will set about making a name for themselves in Illawarra’s opens and U18 competitions.
They have already won a swag of admirers through their spirited style, all of whom will be watching their progress with keen interest throughout the year.
Among them is NSW Women’s State of Origin coach and former NRL player, Ben Cross, who has seen growth of female contact rugby league across the state first-hand through the NSWRL’s pathways program.
He said the development of the game in Batemans Bay is another positive step forward.
“There are more and more girls playing across the state, and it’s great that girls in the Batemans Bay now have that option,” he said.
“It’s definitely an area we will keep an eye on.”
The Batemans Bay Tigers U18s and Opens women’s sides will begin training at Mackay Park from 5pm on January 19.
Any girls wanting to play can get more information from the Batemans Bay Womens Rugby League page.
