Enjoying the sunshine at Garden Bay, they came across a dead seal on the rocks.
The walkers thought the injuries on the seal looked suspicious.
“It might be completely innocent, but it didn’t look right,” one said.
The walker reported the incident to the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) who said they forwarded the report to National National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). An NPWS spokesperson said they had not been called to the incident.
“We usually ask people to report any marine mammal incidents to us or to Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA),” she said.
Another NPWS spokesperson said stressed seals may “haul out” of the water to rest or recover from injury, and simply appear dead.
