He’s no graffitti artist, but Phil Goldberg got to leave his 'tag' while walking 14,460 steps, working in the Eurobodalla bush.

The Forestry Corporation lead forest tech said his work was interesting but strenuous: “Some of the bush is open but a lot of it is heavy going, especially around the drainage reaches,” Mr Goldberg said.
“It is hard work, relentless. You are doing it day in and day out and at my age that is not real good.”
The 61 year old said ten years ago he could almost run through the bush, but no longer. Fortunately his leadership role provided some respite.
“Having a greater supervisory role has given me a bit of a break from all the bush-bashing. I lead a crew of four. We go in and mark out a compartment of forest prior to a contractor coming in to log,” Mr Goldberg said.
Mr Goldberg and his crew mark out distances and boundaries and identify and mark habitat and recruitment trees.
“When we are marking out in the foothills we have to identify 10 trees per hectare. Once you establish an area and work out the required number of trees to mark, away you go,” he said.
The idea is the habitat trees will last maybe five years before they fall over; then the recruitment tree will take over”.
Areas sensitive to logging disturbance are also marked out.
“When we have an area larger than 0.01 of a hectare and 70 per cent rock, it gets marked, and with a 20 metre buffer added,” Mr Goldberg said.
“That protects orchids and lizards and such like living in those rocky environments.”
The Lilli Pilli man has been working in the bush since 1974. He said forestry was a good industry to work in and very interesting, although there is no typical day.
“Wearing my fitbit that day, I started at 7am and finished at 3pm. I spent some time inspecting a logging site and then I went out with crew to do some marking before heading back to the office,” Mr Goldberg said.
