The Moruya horsewoman took out the state finals for the Young Judges competition for Australian Stock Horses, at the 2017 Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Although Miss Afflick had a lifetime of experience – “I’ve grown up around horses. I actually had a pony waiting for me when I born” –she faced stiff competition, with 30 competitors vying to become NSW’s top young judge.
“To qualify for the finals at Sydney, you have to win at a branch show first. I won at Milton,” Miss Afflick said.
The state finals are a two phase competition.
“First, four horses come into the ring and you need to place them in your order of judging,” Miss Afflick said.
Of the initial 30 young-judge competitors, the 14 who placed the horses in the correct order were asked to explain their choices, before the winner is selected.
As this year’s state finalist, Miss Afflick will represent NSW at the national competition for young judges at next year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.
The Young Judges competition is jointly run by the Royal Agricultural Society and the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW. The competition is open to young people between the ages of 15 years and under 25 years of age and encourages the development of expertise critical to the ongoing improvement of produce in the agricultural sector.
