Federal MP Ann Sudmalis has spoken out about the complexities of the aged care system after a Long Beach couple were outraged at hefty charges for their care package.
Evan Holt, on behalf of his wife, Norma, contacted the Member for Gilmore after receiving a bill of $829.50 for 7.5 hours of in-home care provided by the Eurobodalla Home Nursing Service, a subsidiary of Merimbula Home Nursing Service, in July.
In an interview with the Bay Post/Moruya Examiner on Wednesday, Mrs Sudmalis said the situation was “horrendous”.
The MP also acknowledged the Holts’ case had caused “undue economic hardship" in a press release from her office on Thursday.
“I was made aware of the situation on Friday (September 23), and immediately escalated the situation and have been dealing directly with the Minister’s office to have the concerns clarified,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“The service provider has agreed that nothing needs to be paid until the actual fee, rather than the estimated fee, is calculated.”
She said more work was needed to reform the processes currently in place for people accessing aged care assistance.
“The legislation requires an aged care income assessment form to be filled out that is quite onerous, particularly for people who have complicated financial situations,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“It is easy to make mistakes or omissions when you are dealing with such complicated paperwork, which can result in fee subsidies not being paid.
“Service providers themselves have identified this as a barrier.”
Mrs Sudmalis said she would raise the issue with the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, Ken Wyatt, the Minister for Human Services, Alan Trudge, and the Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter.
“(Mr Holt’s) opened up a lot of doors on things that need to be fixed,” Mrs Sudmalis said."
Merimbula Home Nursing Service has declined to comment at this stage.
