The initiative was started in 2001 by the Australian Solar Council to promote renewable energy, recycling and other practices designed to lessen our impact on the environment.
The September 17 event provides an opportunity for people to visit some of Australia’s leading green homes – ones that are environmentally friendly, cheaper to run and more comfortable to live in.
Paul Dolphin’s Malua Bay home will be one of several open to the public in the Eurobodalla, from 10am to 4pm.
The Carramar Drive property was designed to show how using certain materials during construction can result in a sustainable house at no extra cost.
The house features blockwork walls and an exposed concrete floor for thermal mass, with no treated timber and low VOC paints and sealers.
The stainless steel used in the kitchen means no exposure to formaldehyde gasses.
Also on show will be Simon and Elise Byrne’s Long Beach shipping container home.
The Clarence St home, made from four shipping containers, features insulated external cladding for thermal performance, 100 per cent recycled HW doors and windows and zero VOC finishes.
The architect of the home was Matt Elkan and its builder was Luke Price.
According to the Sustainable House team, it highlights “economy, energy efficiency and sustainability, and how to do as much as possible on a very limited budget”
Sustainable House Day throws open the doors to homes across the country that have been designed to minimise their footprint on the environment.
“Off-grid living, solar with battery storage, green roofs, hemp walls and innovative energy efficient design are just some of the features people are likely to see on the day,” the association said.
More than 170 houses will be open across Australia.
