The Broulee Public School students were among a gathering of coders, graphic artists, gamers and musicians at the Bega Valley Gamer Dev Jam in Merimbula on September 10 and 11.
Teacher Cathy West said students worked alongside industry professionals to develop workable games.
“The students were an inclusive part of the weekend and gained skills in industry-grade game development software,” Mrs West said.
“The mentors were impressed with their level of understanding, creativity and confidence at such a young age.”
Among the mentors was star of ABC TV’s Good Game, Stephanie ‘Hex’ Bendixsen.
Mrs West said her students were eager to share their creations with the TV presenter and even received some expert tips.
Mentors from the esteemed video game and 3D animation school, the Academy of Interactive Entertainment, and the Loaded Gamer and Buzzy TV also worked with students.
The primary school teacher said the weekend opened doors for students considering careers in the video game industry.
“I was surprised to learn that there is a degree for game creating,” student Sunni West said.
“I instantly knew what I wanted to do when I go to university.
“There were great mentors that helped people to code. My mentor Jack helped me ... I made a rally car game and a flight simulator game.”
Student Kayum Fernandez also felt inspired from the event.
“After two long days of learning about coding, I shut the laptop and said to myself ‘Ahh, what an awesome experience!’,” Kayum said.
The event marked the first time the Bega Valley had hosted a gaming development convention. It was made possible by IntoIT Sapphire Coast and South East Arts.
