August 18 marks the 51st anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, a campaign during the Vietnam War in which 18 Australians lose their lives.
Gary Traynor spoke on the importance of August 18 in Australian military history, listing the casualties from all battles Australia fought on that date.
In all, 521 Australians perished during the fighting in Vietnam.
The day was known as ‘Long Tan Day’ until 1987, when Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced the name-change.
