The $4.8 million project will include a waste disposal area to provide an estimated seven years’ capacity.

Planning and Sustainability Director Lindsay Usher said waste minimisation had delayed the need to extend the facility, however, the time had come to proceed with the planned works.

“We place a strong focus on waste minimisation and our residents are great recyclers, among the best in NSW,” he said.

“Initiatives like mattress and polystyrene recycling have extended the life of our landfills, however, the fact remains that the community needs to send waste to landfill and the time has come to expand our northern facility.”

The waste management facility expansion will be constructed over 12-months, in line with the latest NSW Environment Protection Authority guidelines for solid waste landfills. Vegetation clearing will be necessary prior to the excavation works.

NSW Public Works Advisory will manage delivery of the project for Council, with construction carried out by successful tenderer RD Miller Pty Ltd.

The waste management facility will continue to service the community as normal throughout the works.

Council expanded its southern waste management facility at Brou, north of Narooma, in 2016.
