The women who do all the work but don’t feel they deserve the credit because they didn’t physically give birth to the children they love.
We all know woman who cook and clean like mums, get kids off to school like mums do, put food on the table, help their kids with homework and even wipe away tears and pick up the pieces.
But these special woman can find the day that’s designed to celebrate mums somewhat tough to get through.
So too can those mums who may not be able to see their children on Mother’s Day.
Those who are estranged from their own would also find this coming Sunday particularly hard to bear.
For these people who don’t get roses, chocolates or bubbles at lunch, the Facebook declarations and happy snaps on Instagram that flood our feeds might even be irritating, dare I say it, even hurtful.
It’s symptomatic of the world we live in – picture-perfect lives, especially on celebratory days.
So this year let’s make Mother’s Day a day that’s plain and simple. One where it’s okay to just be.
No expectations, no fears that your day isn’t living up to the hype –that you’re not having as much fun as the next mum snapped in her favourite frock, sipping champers on a harbour yacht.
This year maybe take a breath. Stop for a second.
If you want to sit on the couch and watch your favourite Netflix series, back-to-back episodes even, with a block of chocolate in your lap, then do that.
Or if you want to get active, give the Mother’s Day fun run a go. Get down to Corrigans Reserve to the Mother’s Day Classic and soak up the atmosphere of mums who chose to walk, run, skip with their kids in honour of those who can’t be here.
If you want to frock up and savour the best bubbly then make that ok too.
Because in this day and digital age, being a mum ad living up to all the expectations can be tough. You do things you feel you’ve gotta do.
It can feel like you’re running a never-ending marathon.
So this Mother’s Day lets just celebrate letting mums be – whatever they want to be. Do whatever they want to do. Let it be the day they have nothing to live up to.
