The Russian cross cultural reporter will be appearing live at South Tribe as part of River of Art on May 27, in support of Melbourne comedian Kirsty Webeck.
We were lucky enough to catch up with Polichnya recently over a Kebab:
Q: What exactly is a cross cultural reporter?
A: It is taking a report and crossing it with culture. You know, tunnels and pop music. Beaches and depression. Cross culture.
Q: What is your earliest memory?
A: Many happy sad emotional memories, flood back to me of my childhood on the Baltic Sea. My babushka used to take me walking with wind whipping our hair, and tell me bedtime stories of pre-Stalinist Russia. We ate a lot of potatoes.
Q: In your videos, you seem to be searching for something beyond the story. What is it?
A: Life is a search. Search everywhere you can. Especially when a camera is on you, to, you know, film it.
Q: You’ve mentioned the idea of ‘looking with your mouth’ can you tell us more about this?
A: Does not everybody look with their mouths? You know, taste life? Bite of more than you can chew. Is this the right translation?
Q: Cleary style is important to you. How would you describe your style?
A: Easy, fun, carefree, none the less taking in the importance of the weight of the world on your shoulders – hence shoulder pads.
Q: What draws you so much to this area?
A: Batehaven shops reminds me of Chernobyl, plus Byron Bays is top tourist destination, No?
Q: What do the Eurobodalla and Russia have in common?
A: The Eurobodalla and Russia are kind of Euro but not quite – not yet super fancy but almost. Also, I see many fine tractors in Bodalla.
Q: What is your greatest love?
A: Nikolai
Q: What can people expect to see when you appear live at South Tribe?
A: They will see me at the bar watching Kirsty Webeck perform. She is very funny womans. I will be checking carefully she is not stealing my material. Also, many entertaining and fascinating quips about life, love and fish and chips.
Q: Why have you decided to appear live on stage?
A: For the monies that you will be giving me.
Q: In your video’s, you seem to engage well with local men. Is this because they are so culturally aware?
A: Yes. Australian men celebrate Russia culture. I see much Vodka, in cans, crushed empty on the ground in the park.
Q: You say ‘hard work is hard’. Can you tell us more about this?
A: Ever pull a plow with a baby on your hip? No, me neither. I am barren. This causes great pain and hardship, my mother banished me because of this. But no worry, I throw myself in cross cultural pollination of a different kind. Work – hard work.
