On a pleasant winter’s day quite a crowd descended on the home of Carolyn and Mark Noake to learn about the local species of Grevillea. After morning tea in the sunshine we assembled to hear from Mark how to best access the South East Group’s website www. southeast.austplants.com.au and discover the information about our group and links to many other sites which would benefit members.

A simple illustrated explanation followed of the plant features used by botanists when identifying Grevilleas and Mark showed us some close-ups of flower parts which he had photographed using his digital camera attached to the frame of an old film enlarger.
After lunch and our regular “show and tell” session the group explored the three and a half acres of Australian plants in a setting inspired by open grassy woodlands. Recent garden bed development has been extensive to accommodate the growing collection of Grevilleas and other Australian plants. There are many plants growing happily in well drained soils derived from granite. Drainage is managed mainly using above ground swales to divert heavy rainfall to a dam and away from garden beds. Hopefully all attending went home enthused to plant some new Grevilleas.
Our next meeting is a joint meeting with Friends of Grasslands on Saturday, September 3, at 10am.
The weekend has been arranged by APS member Jenny Liney, who has been Curator of the Herbarium at Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens for over 20 years. Joining her is consultant botanist, Jackie Miles, also a prominent APS member. Jackie’s intimate knowledge of the flora of this area of NSW will benefit greatly those attending.
On Saturday following a discussion of FOG’s history and why these threatened ecosystems remain important, the group will examine the regenerating grassy areas of Carolyn and Mark’s garden before heading to the old Glendeuart cemetery area. For inquiries please ring Jillian on 0421 432 953.
