This mapping is a significant resource to target infestations of invasive weedy species on the pristine Eurobodalla coastline.
With the help of volunteers and contractors the areas outlined by the mapping will be treated and inspected periodically to help maintain the high quality of our coastline.
Some of the major works already taking place include the eradication of West Australian Hickory Wattle on Corrigans Beach and Marram Grass at Durras, Surfside, Batehaven, Surfbeach, Rosedale, Tomakin and Broulee.
These plants compete with native beach and dune vegetation, such as spinifex grass.
In addition to weed treatment, volunteers will also be called on to help with dune plantings.
Marram grass had been planted for dune stabilisation in the past.
Dunecare groups should avoid planting species on beaches which are not local natives.
It is always preferable to plant only locally native species from locally collected seed.
Environment Project Officer Tom Dexter said the areas of dead Marram grass would be replaced with endemic dune species and this was where the volunteers could really help.
“We have 15,000 tubes grown from local native stock to plant between Durras and Wallaga Lake over the next two years,” he said.
Council will be in touch with local communities and Landcare groups as the mapping moves south.
Other targeted dune weeds include Sea Spurge, African Daisy, Beach Daisy, African Pelargonium (Durras) and Gazania.
Weeds outside the scope of this project will also be mapped. These include but are not limited to Bitou Bush, Boneseed, Mirror Bush, Asparagus Fern, Norfolk Island Hibiscus, Juncus acutus and Yukka.
The next leg of mapping will include the southern areas of the Shire from Moruya to Narooma and Narooma to Wallaga Lake.
