Former independent Rob Oakeshott has picked up more than $70,000 in election funding after his late entry into election 2016.

Fellow former independent Tony Windsor, who came out of retirement to take on Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, has been paid $72,000 while former TV presenter James Mathison, who tried to topple Tony Abbott in his Liberal stronghold of Warringah, might have fallen well short but he has received $25,000.

Derryn Hinch will come to Canberra with $545,000 funding for his Justice Party after a strong showing in Victoria, while Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party is flush with $1.6 million after its strong support across the country.

Overall, $60 million will be paid out in election funding, the Australian Electoral Commission announced on Wednesday.

For candidates who receive at least four per cent of the primary vote, each vote is worth $2.62 from the public.

The biggest single recipient is the Liberal Party, which received $23.5 million, just ahead of Labor's $22.4 million.

The Greens received $6.3 million.

The power of pulling the "donkey vote" column is evidenced in the public funding that has gone to the Liberal Democratic Party of NSW Senator David Leyonhjelm.

At the 2013 election, the Liberal Democrats received $1 million after taking 10 per cent of the primary vote in NSW.

This time round, the party received just $48,000.

Mr Oakeshott recently addressed criticism that he had waited until three weeks before election day to announce his candidacy in an attempt to cash in on election funding.

He told News Ltd that he had spent $52,000 on his campaign and would bank any surplus to contest Cowper at the next election.

Among the minor parties to receive funding were Rise Up, Australian Liberty Alliance, Glenn Lazarus Team, Bullet Train, Sex Party and HEMP.

The AEC said it had paid 99 per cent of the entitlements calculated from last Friday.

A second and final round of payments will be made once vote counting is finalised.
