Over the last 20 years, 3.8 million people have celebrated National Tree Day by planting 22.3 million trees and plants throughout Australia. Now it’s your turn to celebrate.
Pick up some free native plants for your garden this Sunday from Euorbodalla Shire Council’s Plant Swap.
All you have to do is pull out some weeds from your garden, pop them in a bag and bring them along to the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens on Sunday between 10am and 2pm to take part in Council’s Plant Swap.
If you want to know which plants are weeds in the Eurobodalla head to the council’s webpage, www.esc.nsw.gov.au, and search “weeds”.
There are many reasons why planting native plants that are local to your area is important.
Local native plants have adapted over a long period of time to the specific conditions in your area. They are therefore best adapted to grow in these local conditions and will be more likely to thrive than plants from a different region.
Local plant communities provide the most suitable food and habitat for local native wildlife. This is especially the case if a mixture of plants is selected to reflect the balance (between trees, shrubs and groundcovers) that originally occurred before disturbance.
In our urbanised world, much of the threat to our native wildlife is through loss of habitat due to clearing for urban development or agriculture. This can be seen as a "death by a thousand cuts" for our native bushland, which has become increasingly fragmented as a result.
If you’d rather get down and dirty in your local community the following Landcare groups are holding National Tree Day planting events where they welcome new volunteers:
- Tomakin Coastcare, meet at the Tomakin Boat Ramp at 9am on Friday, July 29.
- Little Lake Narooma Landcare, meet at the bike path opposite 52 Ballingalla Street, Narooma at 9.30am on Thursday, August 4.
Research commissioned by Planet Ark and Toyota Australia, who jointly organise National Tree Day, has been proven that planting trees is not only good for the environment but for you too.
The research shows a multitude of benefits associated with green time including enhanced learning, concentration, healing, relaxation and recovery, to name a few.
Sounds like the perfect way to be part of the biggest nature event in the country.
