The Broulee Dolphins Rugby Union Club’s under 11s hosted Vikings at Captain Oldrey Park on Saturday.
The under 11s, re-graded into the top division, opened the match strongly, scoring a try in the opening minutes.
However, Vikings countered with an attacking try of their own soon after.
The game settled from the opening blitz and some strong defence from the Dolphins forwards Daniel Wall Jack Hughes, Clare Mass and Ben McGann kept the Vikings at bay.
Broulee’s backline was on point with some damaging runs from Rusty Van Dyk and Bailey Brady.
Braidon George was rewarded with a try after an attacking run from fullback.
Zac Holmes lead the team by example at the breakdown.
Holmes turned over some good ball for the backs.
The match was a tough see-saw through both halves but Broulee managed to keep the lead throughout.
Brendan Young had a terrific game until he was injured in the second half.
Try scorers for the day were forwards Daniel Wall and Jack Hughes.
From the backs, Bailey Brady, Braidon George and Indhi Filmer.
Coach Ian Filmer was impressed with how well the team supported the running players.
“This was a terrific game from all the players as they moved up to first division,” Filmer said.
“I was very impressed with the way this young team made the decision on their own to move off a penalty near the opposition try line that resulted in a try, well done to them.”
