The site of this year’s grand final was discussed at a Group 16 meeting in Bega on Wednesday night, where the Roosters were given two weeks to show there are sufficient amenities and canteen space at the ground.
Group 16 secretary, Anne Brown, said there needed to be significant improvement on where the ground is at the moment.
“They need to do something,” she said.
“The two main concerns are the toilets and the canteen. In two weeks, Group 16, will review the relevant changes via email and then make a decision.
“Options that were discussed at the meeting include using the canteen within the basketball stadium and installing portaloos.
As it stands, the other two clubs who have put in a bid to host the game are Moruya and Bombala.”
The meeting followed on from a letter by the Moruya Sharks to the Group 16 committee, outlining the suitability of Ack Weyman Oval.
Moruya Secretary, John Cornall said he can understand the reluctance to move the grand final away from Bega, but believes there needs to be an alternative option.
“Obviously Bega is central to the Southern Clubs within the competition but this is about ensuring there is change,” he said.
“If nothing reasonably substantial is done within the time that is allocated, then Group 16 has to walk away as that is what we voted on.
“Hopefully if the improvements are made, it will come at no cost to Group 16.”
Cornall believes Ack Weyman would have no trouble recreating a grand final atmosphere.
“The Sharks have one one of the best supporter bases in the competition so I don’t think would be any question as to whether we would be able to attract a big enough crowd to the game,” he said.
The Moruya Sharks wrapped up their fifth consecutive minor premiership on the weekend with a 38-34 win against Bega.
