On Friday, June 3, 30 members were welcomed by fellow members Maureen and Martin Daniels, to their small but neat garden, which included numerous displays of Maureen’s bonsai plants. All members were impressed by her beautiful plants.

Garden visits are a regular outing for club members and are regarded as an opportunity for a social event, as well as a garden inspection.
Meantime, on a dreary Thursday, 53 members of the Club attended the monthly meeting. With the formal meeting and a delicious afternoon tea completed, members greeted Stuart Whitelaw from SAGE who presented a very interesting narration outlining the development of the community gardening group from Moruya.
Stuart explained how the SAGE garden group was established in 2009, in Moruya, to provide an area for people to grow edible food in an organic and sustainable way.
He said the garden was now well established, but this was only achieved because of the collective goodwill of the members to make it a success. Members have been prepared to do any job to get the desired outcome – from digging in the gardens to fencing and erecting sheds.
The group decided to supply local cafes and restaurants with their fresh, organic produce to raise money to develop the garden area. They have established garden beds, built garden sheds (which collect water for storage in tanks), installed watering and composting systems to create a truly sustainable site.
Visitors are welcome, but are advised to check on opening times.
The popularity of their produce led to establishment of a very popular (and award winning) farmers market, which now includes many local producers of fresh produce.
The SAGE group are happy to help and advise any gardener in their sustainable methods of gardening and have actively encouraged younger people to embrace gardening as a healthy interest/activity and perhaps a job.
Members thanked Stuart for his talk and would like to have him return in the near future. The Garden Club will meet in the Anglican Church Hall on Thursday, July 28, which will be the AGM.
