Fifty members of the Italian cultural association of Batemans Bay, Amici d’Italia di Batemans, recently gathered at the Bay Waters Inn for a dinner celebration for the 70th anniversary of the referendum that led to Italy becoming a republic.

After a short address by Professor Peter Hill on the historical background of the event and the singing of the Italian National Anthem, everyone enjoyed a two-course meal followed by tea, coffee and Italian amaretti.
The table decorations reflected the colours of the Italian flag.
Amici d’Italia di Batemans Bay was founded in 2003 by Mariannina de Rocco to give students of her Italian language classes the opportunity to meet socially and practice the language.
“This annual event is now part of the regular social calendar in Batemans Bay " Ms Rocco said.
