Mr Skuse moved to Cairns in January to study law at University, while wife Katrina has secured a job in real estate.
The house they were renting burnt down on Sunday night, and they and Katrina’s two children lost most of their possessions.
“The house next door caught fire and it spread to our house,” Mr Skuse said.
“The old Queenslanders are beautiful but they go up like a box of matches.”
Fortunately, a man in the house where the fire started alerted Katrina and the two children who escaped unharmed.
Both houses were destroyed by the fire.
Mr Skuse was out at the time.
“It was traumatic but we’re fine,” he said.
“The way I see it, that’s what you’ve been dealt, so deal with it.
“There are a lot of people worse off.”
Mr Skuse said the family were now renting a two-bedroom flat. They had been looking to buy a house, and the house they were renting was one of those they were looking at.
The way I see it, that’s what you’ve been dealt, so deal with it.
