If the ACT Government can cull 2000 Australian icons in a territory with more green voters per capita than Eurobodalla, why can't an equivalent cull of bats take place in Batemans Bay?
The safety and welfare of humans is more important than an over population of bats.

Batty solution
The detailed map (Bay Post/Moruya Examiner, May 11) covering the current, unsuitable, and potentially suitable (suiting the bats or the humans?) habitats of the Batemans Bay bats presents the perfect solution to the problem.
Erect a large copy of the map near the current site, marked with a “You are here” arrow, and highlight the “suitable” areas. The actual suitable sites could be identified by spraying from the air with an environmentally friendly orange spray containing bat attractant.
The bats could then form into separate colonies and head for their new homes. For the older bats, whose olfactory and optical senses are failing, small GPS devices could be provided, pre-set to the new locations.

Smarter than we think?
The bats may be smarter than we think.
It appears all the talk of dispersal has done the trick. It does appear most of the damn bats have flown north. Instead of lining up the mayor for ridicule, how about we have mature discussion on the best ways to prevent these pests from coming back?
A number of people, including some councillors, have put a lot of time and energy into ridicule instead of helping to find a solution. It’s all well and good to have a shot at the mayor but if you haven’t a plausible solution then you should leave it to others to do so.

Driven to poetry
Other than soiling our suburb and hanging from trees
There must be uses for fruit bats that bring us to our knees
They cannot poo when upside down so they do it in flight
An umbrella becomes a prerequisite when strolling at night
From mice and rabbits came Micky Mouse and Bugs Bunny
But from bats came Dracula who was never quite as funny
To stop them hanging around a hormone should be found
To stop their feet locking in slumber, so they fall to the ground
A delicacy in some Pacific Islands I have been advised
With excellent sauce the foul flavour can easily be disguised
Surely they can be barbequed into delicious crispy cuisine
Or gently simmered in a casserole with mushroom de crème
Perhaps lightly curried or energized with hot chilli heat
Or just teased from the bone, the soft and tender meat
Perhaps filleted and then rolled in garlic infused crumb
Or turned into deep fried nuggets to please the empty tum
At a time when small business has been encouraged to innovate
Here are some great suggestions that many of jobs can create
Wings can be artistically fashioned into umbrellas or fans
Or meshed wings can make lamp shades, and I have other plans
Taxidermists can cure bats as toys to hang in childrens rooms
They can face off with model Spitfires as imaginary war looms
They could also be shredded and attached to a stout little stick
To remove unwanted toilet smudges, a clever little trick
Like can toads, ornate ash trays could be their calling
But with smoking in decline, the demand could be falling
These ideas may alleviate the fears of us, the threatened species
As we live our lives in Batemans Bay, showered by bats faeces!

Afraid of Alfred plans
Did you know that Eurobodalla Shire Council has put forward a proposal to rezone Alfred Ryan Park?
Meaning that, if the citizens of Batemans Bay do not object loudly enough, instead of having our park, we will end up with more rows of units, or something else that developers want to line our waterfronts with.
Unfortunately, developers are usually in it for profits, not for the common good.
I was shocked when I heard this.
Parks are for the people! They are there for ever, for our children and our grandchildren as well. It is my understanding that Alfred Ryan left this land for the enjoyment of the people of Batemans Bay.
Council claims that the park is underutilised, but I would have to disagree, as most times that I pass by I see people using it.
I think it is outrageous to think of taking the park from the people.
Obviously, we cannot take our parks for granted. If you agree with my sentiments, I urge you to write to the council and let them know, before they go any further with this plan,
