The Eurobodalla Branch of Surfrider Foundation Australia joined forces with Tuross Coastal Landcare last Sunday, May 1 to rid the dunes behind One Tree Point at Tuross Head of noxious weeds.

The works, organised by South East Local Land Services, involved removing invasive species such as Cape Ivy, Arrowhead and Sea Spurge and replacing weeds with native plants.
Peter Gow, Land Services Officer at LLS, gave instructions about how to identify weeds and safe, effective methods of removal.
The Surfrider Foundation was established in Australia in 1991 with a mission to protect waves and beaches. The Eurobodalla Branch commenced in 2014.
Branch leader Allen Grimwood said that the purpose of the branch is to maintain the quality of surfbreaks on the far south coast and to ensure that surfers have unimpeded access to breaks.
In spare time and when the surf is flat, members carry out clean ups of sand dunes and headlands as well as planting activities to prevent erosion.
There is currently a hotspot of erosion at Toragy Headland, Moruya Heads which Surfrider is seeking to restore. Vehicles accessing the headland have caused wheel ruts and tracks. Surfrider is asking Eurobodalla Shire Council to dedicate funds in the next Community Strategic Plan to formalise unsealed access.
“Headlands like Toragy are sacred to surfers and he is not aware of anywhere else in NSW where motorists can drive anywhere they like over such a significant coastal site. The damage is enormous and is causing the loss of topsoil and native grasses,” Mr Grimwood said.
