MEN’S BOWLS
The final round of the 2016 pennant season was played on Saturday with the Tuross division 7 side needing the results to go their way to finish on top of the table.
Going into the round of matches, Tuross was half a point behind Braidwood and needed to win and hope that Braidwood either won by a smaller margin or lost.
Tuross were at home to Malua Bay and managed a 9 – 1 victory.
Ron Richardson’s team had a great start to their game racing to a 18 – 1 lead after nine ends. They never looked in danger running out winners 26 – 12.
Ron Cox’s four also recorded a good win despite winning less ends than their opposition. They led all the way picking up multiples of 4 or 5 whenever Malua Bay threatened.
The third match was a much tighter battle with the lead fluctuating. Ian Wratten’s team had the better of the start but by the 10th end they were behind 11 – 7. They won the next 4 ends to lead 14 – 11, but Malua Bay had the better of the last very tight 7 ends to win 18 – 16.
At the end of the day Tuross won overall 64 shots to 47.
However, the news quickly came through that Braidwood had a thumping 10- 0 win over Tomakin to win the district pennant in this division by 1.5 points.
Congratulations to Braidwood who now play in the zone playoffs in Moruya. It is some years since they have advanced to this level and is a great reward for all the work they have done on improving their facilities and promoting bowls in their community. They are worthy winners and will represent our district well.
