John Christie, of Catalina, attended Wednesday evening’s feisty community meeting in Batemans Bay and, predictably, the subject of flying foxes dominated discussion.

Many ideas are flying around as to solutions, but John thought he’d try poetry.

In the meantime, here’s Mr Christie’s effort.
Bat Blues
I sit on my back deck and watch them fly by
to the blossoms of banksia and tall spotted gum
These small furry mammals that once learned to fly
A wonder of nature each and every one
But like the guest that has stayed on and stayed
And then uninvited they brought their best mate
When will you all go? the townspeople prayed
and the welcome of residents turned into hate
Our beautiful township is turning to s...t
and the birdlife and critters are leaving in droves
The bat camps are dreadful like scenes from the pit
with the screeching and scratching of our furry foes
The smell is atrocious; a full blast of bat
as they mark out their kingdom to all of their kind
And if you go near them you’d best wear a hat
and maybe a gas mask would be handy you’d find.
Enough is enough the townspeople cried
as in their hundreds to the meeting they went
It’s been far too long and nothing’s been tried
and roused at the council their anger to vent
But the wheels of bureaucracy are all ifs and buts
With the talking and dithering and passing of bucks
While the people affected are all turning nuts
and the bats will keep coming till this township sucks
