Ten crews and more than 30 volunteers battled the blaze, which started at 10.30am on a private property.
Far South Coast RFS team leader John Cullen said the fire had burnt six hectares on the eastern side of the highway.
“It is contained and crews are working on a couple of control lines; one being the highway and the other being a good solid line at the access to a property on the northern side of the fire,” he said on Thursday afternoon.
“The weather is calming down and the southerly change has come through. Conditions are starting to cool down and the wind is not as rough and variable as it was.”
Mr Cullen praised the efforts of the volunteer fire fighters.
“They have worked under immense conditions with the wind to contain the fire,” he said.
An RFS spokesman said the fire threatened a property before it was controlled.
“A small spot fire began on the western side of the highway but was quickly extinguished,” he said.
Trunketabella resident Bob Caldwell, who owns 100 acres west of the highway, said he was watching anxiously on Thursday, hoping the fire did not jump the highway.
The highway was shut between the Tuross Head intersection and Trunketabella.
4PM: Emergency services are on site working to put the fire out.
There has been a report that the Princes Highway is closed at the Tuross Head turn-off.
2.20pm: A contraflow has been put in place on the Princes Highway to allow traffic to pass the fire.

Mr Caldwell owns 100 acres west of the highway and said power failed just before he became aware of the fire.

A small spot fire began on the western side of the highway but was quickly extinguished.

1.00pm Police are warning of long delay.
12.57pm: A Rural Fire Service spokesman said that a southerly wind had hit, but the conditions had slightly improved and fire crews were considering putting in a small back burn.
He said the Princes Highway remained closed but no evacuations had been ordered.
Witness Melanie Watt said the following:
“Hi there, just a heads up we were on our way to Batemans Bay and got stopped because a bushfire about 20m from the road just near Trunketabella gardens, 4km north of bodalla bridge, the police are stopping people or turning them back as there is going to be a "big delay". Just thought you might want to let people know there's going to be a long wait.”
12.40pm: Emergency services are attending a bushfire at Turlinjah, near the Tuross Head intersection.
Live Traffic NSW reports the fire has closed the Princes Highway in both directions. Please avoid if possible.
