A crowd of more than 100 excited artists, friends and family gathered together for Canberra judge Ray Barnett to announce the winners of the Olive Tree Portrait Prize on Friday evening.
Ms Paleg said her artwork was inspired by a friend.
“The photo was taken of Eunice Cole on her 80th birthday. The image captured her having a great time,” she said.
“I was really surprised to win because I thought the standard of work was excellent.”
Ms Paleg also teaches art from her Surf Beach studio, the Grace Paleg fine Art Studio Gallery.
Robert Picknell won second prize, Pan Neaussler came third, Lesley Whale was awarded high commended and Nicole Dixon was given an encouragement award.
The people’s choice prize will be announced on December 3, at the closing of the exhibition.
