The sun was shining, the track was rated ‘good’ and Moruya horses took out five of the eight races.
Good tracks in NSW have been few and far between of late, so it was no surprise to see huge nominations for the meeting.
Even with eight capacity fields about 30 horses missed a start.
The day started well when Mark Macdonald’s Can Be Bossy won a quality two-year-old race in fine style.
As reported two weeks ago, this fellow has lots of ability and Mark is now looking for a race in Sydney for him.
John Marzol’s Bill N Eve backed up after his fine win at Dubbo last week in the silver goblet and ran a good fourth.
In race four John Marzol’s new addition to the stable, Lothello, won its maiden and it looked like there may be more wins to come.
In the same race Gresham Road flew home for third and Redondo Rock ran a top race first up from a spell for a close fourth.
Colbey Hill’s Ward put up a gutsy performance in the next race when it carried the top weight of 63kg to win by a clear margin.
He is one of the better horses trained out of Moruya but finding suitable distance races are a challenge.
Moruya horses filled the placings in the race including fourth and the first four dividend of more than $5000 would have been a nice pick up, hopefully for a local punter.
Race six was one of the exciting finishes on the day and Matt Stephens’ New Vogue prevailed with a well-timed run down the centre of the track.
Wade Mathie’s Bella Mist ran a creditable third and now that it’s fully fit it should win a 1600m in the near future.
The Devils Mark and Lion of Africa had the locals cheering in the next race when they fought out a close finish.
It was the Devils eighth race win.
Popular owner-trainer Rachel Backhouse has done a wonderful job with him.
Lion of Africa certainly deserves a win as he has been a model of consistency in training.
The Racing NSW website offers replays of all races so if you want to review the races have a look in the results section.
The season’s premierships were decided on the day with Lynda Bundy taking out her second trainer’s title and her horse Jacakaizane winning the horse of the year.
Unfortunately local Roly Saxton was pipped at the post by Jeff Penza for the jockey’s title.
Jacakaizane is entered at Rosehill tomorrow.
Although it is a tough field, with the minimum weight and a better track on offer, he will undoubtedly give his all.
Let’s hope for a win.
The next Moruya meeting is on Sunday, August 30 for the registered clubs race day.
Horses to follow:
Can Be Bossy was impressive in a strong race and will be a chance in the city, probably at good odds.
Gresham Station has matured and is capable of winning soon.
Redondo Rock looks like a rock star and has plenty of ability as well.
Bella Mist is now fully fit so look out for her over 1600m.
