Nine of the 12 entrants were first-timers and although it was slightly overwhelming at first, club chairman Brett Williams said they “loved it”.
The Bay’s sprocket rockets set the tone for the day and made their supporters proud.
James Collins and Jaxon Pinder were contenders in the under 6s boy sprockets division.
They placed well and brought home nice trophies.
Shannon Batistic improved as the day continued but was not fast enough to qualify for the finals.
He finished seventh, fifth and fourth in his heats.
Ralph Halton rode in the under 9s boys and placed sixth, fifth and seventh in his motos.
“Ralph said he enjoyed the racing and wants to travel again soon,” Williams said.
“Claudia Hannan had an amazing first open.
“She raced hard all day and showed the girls that this young lady from Batemans Bay was there for business.”
Hannan placed sixth in all of her motos.
In the finals she placed sixth and collected prize money.
Joel Brown was consistent in the under 11s boys and recorded two sevenths and a sixth.
Riley Brown raced the under 13s boys and just missed the semi-finals.
“He showed style all day and showed the crowed that this boy from Moruya can jump,” Williams said.
Riley placed sixth, seventh and fifth in his motos.
Mathew Pinder had a run in the 30 to 34 men’s class and was fifth in each moto, just missing the finals.
“Mathew said he enjoyed the day and can’t wait to do anther,” Williams said.
Kate Halton was on fire in the 35 to 39 women’s cruiser division, placing third in her first moto, followed by two fourths.
Halton was fourth in the final and collected well-earned prizemoney.
Craig Brown rode hard in the fast 40 to 44 men’s class.
Brown, known as Coach Craig, had a great run placing better than he thought with a third in his first moto followed by two fourths.
The coach raced in the final but a mistake on a berm, as he crossed the race line, relegated him at the finish.
Justin Collins raced the 40 to 44 men’s cruiser class against some experienced riders.
“Justin has only been racing BMX for a few weeks but took to the track and pushed hard,” Williams said.
He placed fifth, fourth and sixth in his heats and missed a finals spot.
Williams said he was proud of the spirit club members rode with.
“All riders represented the Batemans Bay BMX Club well and with pride,” he said.
“They all took what challenges the day brought to them in their stride.
“They all did extremely well at their first open event and all were a bit shell-shocked at seeing so many people at the event.”
