But Bronwyn Bishop's choice of Facebook cover photo is a little more unfortunate than your grandparents' endearingly off-the-mark attempts to embrace social media.
That's not to say the aerial shot of the Speaker's leafy Northern Beaches electorate doesn't make for a lovely photo. But it probably isn't the finest choice for a politician who is in hot water for spending thousands of taxpayer dollars on a helicopter flight, before promising to pay the money back.
The cover photo was originally uploaded in October 2012, and like most politicians, Mrs Bishop has a media team to manage her Facebook page.
But that hasn't stopped Facebook users from expressing their outrage - and in many cases, amusement - towards the unfortunate photo choice.
"Seriously! You cannot make this stuff up! You are so self obsessed and out of touch with the feelings of Australians. To have this picture as your cover photo must only mean you are having a laugh at all of us," one Facebook user wrote. "Why didn't you just put a cover photo up of you flipping the bird, would have been just as insensitive."
"Wow this photo is in really bad taste. I thought this was a joke page for a second," another user said of the photo, which has so far amassed more than 1200 comments.
"The 5000 dollar photo! Thanks Bronny," another commenter wrote.
Labor MP Jason Clare also got in on the action, posting the photo to his own page under the caption: "You couldn't make this stuff up."
Mrs Bishop is under pressure over a $5227 helicopter charter flight from Melbourne to a Liberal Party fund-raiser in Geelong, her refusal to apologise for that extravagance, and an $88,000 two-week trip to Europe.
She later said she would repay the cost of the flight, as well as a $1300 fine.
On Wednesday, it also emerged that the Speaker had charged taxpayers more than $3300 across at least eight days between 2010 and 2013, during which time she attended theatre and other arts events.
The Australian Federal Police says it had received multiple requests to investigate Mrs Bishop's travel expenses.
The internet has also taken the opportunity to have a laugh at the Speaker's expense, with endless memes flooding social media over the past week.
