Mr Thomson was diagnosed with a rapidly-growing brain tumour just after Christmas in 2013, after suffering headaches and loss of function in one leg for about two weeks.
He has since had two operations, in January and November 2014, both of which removed about 90 per cent of the tumours.
This year he received treatment as part of a clinical trial, run by oncologist Dr Helen Wheeler at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, however wife Yvonne said his condition had recently deteriorated.
Mrs Thomson said her husband had lost the power of communication, and was wheelchair-bound, but could “still have a laugh”.
“He’s reasonably content at home but he’s gently going,” she said.
“He’s not in pain or anything.
“He still gets a little bit out of each day, but he’s very weary.”
Mrs Thomson said the community and palliative care nursing service had been visiting their Belowra home four days a week.
“It’s a great service,” she said.
“They put lots of things in place to make him more comfortable.”
Eurobodalla Shire councillors voted earlier this month to send their best wishes to their colleague after a suggestion from Cr Peter Schwarz.
Mayor Lindsay Brown said it was hoped Cr Thomson would pull through this difficult period.
