Batteries, better known as "jiggers", are outlawed in world racing .  They improve a horse's performance by sending an electrical shock through the system.

Bradbury pleaded guilty and changed his evidence when appearing before the Racing Appeals Board at Flemington.

Originally, Bradbury told investigators that he'd found the battery on the way to the track one morning. He proceeded to plead not guilty, however on Tuesday morning he changed his version of events and pleaded guilty.

He told the board that he had got the battery from a female friend and was going to try it out on a horse during Mornington track work in April.

Bradbury was interviewed by Racing Victoria investigators, who charged him with having on his person an electric or electronic apparatus that would effect the performance of a trial or race.

Bradbury faced up to three years disqualification but the board took into account his guilty plea and his change of evidence. His disqualification begins immediately.

Head of integrity Dayle Brown said that there is no place for batteries in racing.

"It's clearly against animal welfare and we will remain vigilant against anyone using such an apparatus," he said.

Batteries are rarely seen in Australian racing with the new breed of trainers believing the use of such equipment is outdated and cruel.

Trainer Mark Riley was found with a battery on his property a number of years ago and was disqualified for three years.

One trainer told Fairfax Media recently that: "batteries are of another time and era".

"It's our job to find out why a certain horse is not performing at its best, perhaps it's too much work or not enough work or even something physical that we can't put our finger on," the trainer said.
