The summer pennant was historic in two ways - both grand final captains and first line players were ladies.
Carla Fardell and Vanessa Freeman were captains of Team Stampy and Team Ramy respectively and both have represented the club at open and masters’ competitions.
Half of the grand finalists were female which shows the strength of the women’s talent in Batemans Bay.
Team Stampy finished second after the season and Team Ramy snuck into the top four by a couple of points.
Without star player Mel Clarke, Team Stampy won straight through to the grand final after defeating the minor premiers while Team Ramy had to play through two elimination finals to make the gold playoffs.
The two captains kicked off grand final proceedings and treated supporters to a good show.
Freeman pulled away and won by a nine-point buffer.
Stampy’s number four, Clarke, was out with injury and her would-be opponent, Tracey Gilbert, played an exhibition against New Zealander Boden Strachan. Gilbert was a strong member of her team throughout the competition but lost to the All Black, which had no bearing on the grand final’s outcome.
A fit and focused Allan O’Neill was called on to bring Team Stampy back into contention and faced Richard Stanley in the number two match-up.
O’Neill raced to a 16-point lead but to Stanley’s credit he fought back, using his speed and agility to remain in points to lose by a mere three points.
It was the third time the pair had faced each other during the summer Pennant and the total margin over the games was three points; O’Neill won 2-1.
Darren Reidy was left with the hefty take of defeating Aaron Dunne by a large margin to win the title for Team Stampy.
Reidy fell short, not without a whole-hearted fight, and Dunne sealed the grand final win for Team Ramy.
The consolation grand final saw a similar result with Team Swede downing Fifty Shades by three rubbers to one.
Swede’s captain Paul Lanyon had to dig deep to beat evergreen Stewie Scobie. New addition Peter George downed veteran Rod Gray by a healthy margin.
Sean Spibey beat Darren Stevenson by a few points and the club’s last remaining junior, Quinn Hurley, lost to the super fit kiwi, Strachan, in another exhibition match.
Batemans Bay Devils Squash Club committee member Ted Freeman said the club was rapt in the season.
“All in all the grand final evening was a great success with good crowd support and sensational squash displayed,” Freeman said.
The winter competition will commence in the next few weeks with players preparing themselves for the NSW and Australian Titles in the near future.
