The school’s Interact Club held an out of uniform day with a superhero theme to raise funds for the charity Stop Hunger Now.

They also held lunchtime obstacle course activities, which included trampolines, skateboards and nets in the school hall, for the cost of a coin donation.

The day raised more than $200 for Stop Hunger Now, a non-profit, international hunger-relief organisation that coordinates the distribution of food and other aid to crisis areas across the world.

Batemans Bay High School’s Interact Club, which is affiliated with Rotary, is the main fundraising body within the school for community and charity projects.

Students meet one lunchtime a fortnight to discuss and plan their fundraising projects.

The club became aware of Stop Hunger Now after four of its members attended a Rotary conference in Sydney, where they met with representatives from the organisation.

Student Frances Kerkham said the club was aiming to raise $10,000 to host a Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event, where students would package individual meals including rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavouring mix.

Frances said the organisation would provide the supplies and support for their packing day, but would leave them to distribute the meals to wherever they see the need.

“It was just something we thought was really good because it is helping on a global scale, yet we can help pack the meals and at the end of it we would get to do something on our own,” Frances said.

Frances said previous meal packages have been sent to Aboriginal Australian communities, as well as around the world.

Next on the Interact Club’s fundraising agenda for the cause is a second-hand clothes stall at the Batemans Bay High School markets.

Students have donated clothing themselves for the stall, and would also generously accept further donations.
