The Boars welcomed five new players - Jackson Blake, Luke Gallen, Austin Knight, Rikaea Clark and Samuel Lucas – and turned in a spirited performance to win 53-nil.
The junior Boars were on the scoreboard early as Blake pounced on a loose ball from the kick off, to race 50 metres to score.
On the restart the ball went through the hands to Ben Fish, who showed great evasion skills to run through almost all of the Wests’ team to score a fine try.
The Boars surged towards Wests’ try line on the following plays, and were led well by Fish and Ben McGann.
Josiah Brierley received a nice pass from the ruck and slipped a crisp pass to Dillon Collier, who ran through the defence to score another five-pointer, and Brierley added the extras with his kicking.
The Boars won a scrum late in the first half and Blake took the ball and stormed along the blind side to score a second try.
The home side went to half-time leading 26-nil.
The second half continued well for the Boars with hard-working forwards Malaki Steadman and Lachlan Collier on the ball from the kick-off.
More points came quickly for the Boars as Patrick Hogan scooted through Wests’ defence to score.
Shortly after Bonnie Brewer pounced on a dropped ball and the Boars passed the ball through the hands until Brierley scored and converted his own try.
The Boars didn’t let up as Blake completed his hat-trick before Brewer set Hogan up for a second try late in the second half.
The try scoring fest concluded with Fish storming over after some good work by the Boars’ forwards to secure the ball at the break down.
Referee Peter Ryan blew the full time whistle soon after and the Boars under 11s had won 53-nil.
Junior club president Ronnie Collier said it was great to see the under 11s start with such positive rugby.
“It’s coming from watching the attitude and hard work of our under 15s,” Collier said.
“The under 15s is a fantastic group of young men that have brought a new dimension to our junior club.
“I am looking forward to a great season ahead.”
Batemans Bay Boars under 11s (Tries; Jackson Blake 3, Ben Fish 2, Patrick Hogan 2, Josiah Brierley and Dillon Collier. Conversions: Josiah Brierley 4) defeated Wests nil.
Under 15s edge out Whites
BATEMANS Bay Boars under 15s downed the Queanbeyan Whites 25-19 in round one of the ACT Junior Rugby Union competition at Hanging Rock Oval on Saturday.
Queanbeyan struggled to field a full team with just 10 players making the trip.
However, the Bay was keen to begin its season and both teams opted for a 10-a-side contest.
The Boars made an attacking start and Will Shoemark scored his side’s first try after a 50-metre blind-side run to lead 5-nil.
Shortly after, it was the captain, Jacob Fitzgerald, who went the length of the field to push the score to 10-nil.
Queanbeyan hit back with two quick tries from innovative and creative kicking and led 12-10 at half-time.
The second half began with the Boars’ Bray Johnstone, finishing off a slick back-line play from Jack Colovatti and Brad Morgan, scoring in the corner.
Queanbeyan immediately replied with a length of the field converted try to take back the 19-15 lead.
Through some strong ruck work from Liam Macpherson, Ben Heffernan and Reece Hancock-Cameron, the Boars were able to cross the try line again and hit the front 20-19.
The game was in the balance when a Queanbeyan player was penalised for hitting Jordan Young with a shoulder charge.
Fitzgerald took advantage of the Queanbeyan error and crossed to secure a 25-19 win for the Boars.
