The Dolphins won its first game of the South Coast Monaro Rugby Union competition with a comprehensive 57-14 win against an undermanned Bay Red outfit.

Bay Red could only field 13 players and Broulee capitalised on the open space by running in nine tries to two, scoring a bonus point in the process.

Andy Pustavrh and Sam Peters scored a brace each while Billy-Jack Connelly, Tom Rooke, Tyson Brown, Dave Gwynne and Justin Austin crossed the try line.

Brown and Daniel Aldridge potted three conversions each.

Marcus Neal and Will Thomas scored a try each for Bay Red and Andrew Stewart slotted both conversions.

Broulee Dolphins coach Dave Gwynne said he wanted to see Broulee improve in key areas after its round one loss to Milton.

“We have been working on a few things at training and I wanted to see that converted to some plays on the paddock, which we didn’t do in round one,” Gwynne said.

Gwynne said his side would look at the positives from its win.

“The forwards really aimed up, which was good,” he said.

“I gave them a dressing down before the game that I expected more from the big boys and they certainly provided it; in saying that, they (Bay Red) were two guys down.” 

Broulee hosts Braidwood, who are coming off a good win against Batemans Bay Boars, at Captain Oldrey Park this Saturday.

“They’ll be a test,” Gwynne said.

“They were pretty strong in the trials at the start of the year so we’re expecting a tough game out of those guys.” 

Broulee’s juniors also kicked off the season on Saturday.

The under 10s lost 24-7 to St Edmunds, under 12s beat St Edmunds 90-12, under 14s drew with St Edmunds 24-all, under 16s beat Radford 24-nil and under 18s lost to Radford 55-12.
