After picking up five bags of rubbish over Easter at the Moruya North Head breakwall, the Powell family begged visitors to take their rubbish with them.
Now, a Melbourne visitor to Batemans Bay has added his plea, after finding fishing
hooks, line and rubbish littering the Town Wharf and foreshore during the school holidays.
Long-term visitor Mike Crow said he could not believe the state of the waterfront.
“Most mornings, I walked along the foreshore and every morning there was fishing gear and rubbish left on the wharf near the bridge,” he said.
“There is rubbish all over the place. Lines and hooks are the worst.
“They are dangerous when left around.
“I always pick them up.
“It is one of the most beautiful spots in the world and it is being ruined.
“Fishermen should look after their own pier.”
Mr Crow feared for injured birds.
“You see half a dozen gulls and at least one will have a line wrapped around it or a hook in it,” he said.
He said the mess deterred tourists and discouraged others from fishing.
“If you wanted to fish with your son, you aren’t going to stay on these wharfs because of the rubbish and mess,” Mr Crow said.
“I walk along there five out of seven days and there is always something to be picked up.
“There should be patrols.
“People need to take responsibility for themselves.
“There are a lot of nice people who fish along there, but a few ruin it.”
