Mr Mitchell departed Mt Kosciuszko on March 21 and plans to arrive in Coogee on April 5.
He was inspired after seeing the work of Down Syndrome NSW with his childhood friend’s daughter, Alicia.
Alicia was born with transient Leukaemia and Down syndrome.
“(Her parents) found themselves riding a particularly daunting roller coaster, feeling quite alone,” Mr Mitchell said.
“In the darkness of their isolation a lighthouse beam cut out from the horizon: Down Syndrome NSW.”
Down Syndrome NSW supports children and adults with Down syndrome, their parents and families by sharing experiences, expertise, resources and networks.
It also provides guidance, social networks, education, camps and other services.
