Her daughter has been in and out of psychiatric wards in the past few months, after five years on ice.

Ms Hassen said you would have “never found a more perfect mother” than her daughter, who she said kept a spotless home, was protective, and cared for foster children.

Then the relationship with her husband began to break down.

“She started using ice because ... she thought she would lose weight,” Ms Hassen said.

“She’s totally lost everything.”

Now her daughter will no longer speak to her or her own children, who were taken away.

Ms Hassen said her daughter believed relatives wanted to kill her and that her house was bugged

“These were the things going on in her head,” she said.

“All her senses were totally gone.

“I was terrified for my life.

“All her morals, everything had gone out the window.

“All she wanted was that next shot of ice.”

Ms Hassen offered to stay in a rehabilitation facility with her daughter for moral support.

She also encouraged a fresh start on the South Coast, but nothing has worked.

“As a mother, I am totally at a loss,” she said.

“I have never experienced anything so sad and bewildering and out of my control.

“I’ve lost my daughter and I have no idea what to do.”

Ms Hassen said the impact of ice was nothing like that of heroin.

“Heroin, you die as result of an overdose, no brain damage would occur,” she said.

“Ice has chemicals in it.

“The psych wards have no idea what’s happening.

“It’s a major epidemic.”
