Moruya won the first two matches of Challenge Shield by 6-4 in the men’s 40s and 10-5 in the mixed.

The men’s 20s match was held next, as an exhibition, and Moruya won a close fought game 3-1.

At the end of the third and fourth games Moruya had claimed the shield when its women’s team prevailed 7-4 despite Batemans Bay handing out a 7-nil drubbing in the men’s 30s.

In the final clash, the fast-paced men’s open, Batemans Bay won 6-4.

Moruya Touch Football Association president Phil Caffetto said it was great to reclaim the Challenge Shield.

“It’s great, it’s been a couple of years since we held it,” Caffetto said.

Caffetto said there were a few games which were close and he was surprised there were no drop-offs.

“We thought there might have been one in the 40s but we started to gel,” he said.

The exhibition under 20s match was a hit and Caffetto said it might be incorporated into next year’s challenge.

“They were really good and a fair few backed-up (in other grades),” he said.

Moruya now keeps the shield for the next year and both associations’ will do battle again on the last Friday of February.
