A SERVICE of Light will be held for Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran tonight in Moruya.
St John’s Anglican Church Reverend Linda Chapman said the service would be an opportunity to gather in solidarity for these two men whose lives have been transformed while in Kerobokan prison in Bali and who are now facing death.
'True justice never seeks death'
“At this stage in the process when so much has been done to try and prevent the outcome that looks likely, it is important for us to provide a space for people to gather in spiritual support,” Ms Chapman said.
“While there is a very clear recognition of their wrongful actions in the past, I believe that true justice never seeks death.”
Ms Chapman said that in her experience, most people saw the taking of life as “unjustified”.
“With respect to the Indonesian judiciary system, I think Indonesia would be better served if the two men were to remain in prison,” she said.
“These two men have worked so hard to rehabilitate and are clearly a positive influence in jail.”
She said it was clear that this was a political situation.
“All we can do is recommit ourselves to life and living it well as a community,” Ms Chapman said.
“It is important people have concrete things they can do in this situation.
“Just like coming together and lighting a candle.”
Ms Chapman said the candlelit ceremony would remember the unknown people who have been or are victims of injustice.
“We know there are people all over the world who are victims of injustice,” she said.
“We will consider the unknown people as well.
The candlelit ceremony will be held this Friday evening, March 6, at 5.30pm at St John’s Anglican Church in Page Street, Moruya.
