To meet the requirements set out in the Local Government Act 1993, councils must engage the NSW Electoral Commission 18 months prior to an election or decide to run the elections in-house, or with a private contractor.
Mayor Lindsay Brown said the Electoral Commission ran Eurobodalla’s 2012 elections efficiently and that it was a cost effective way to meet council’s obligations.
“The Commission has services in place like its vote counting system, and complaint and dispute resolution processes that assure people can feel confident in the democratic process,” Cr Brown said.
“Council expects the cost to be around $240,000 for 2016 and the money will come from the restricted funds that we have set aside for elections.”
In 2012 the cost for the Electoral Commission to conduct the election was $220,000.
The next local government elections are set for Saturday, September 10, 2016.
