We’ve been assured by Councillor Milton Leslight over the past few months that property values in our shire were plunging.
He even had a graph to prove it and had local member and state Treasurer Andrew Constance frothing at the mouth over it - on air, in print, even to the Prime Minister.
Projected losses of the order of $880 million were bandied about.
They laid the blame squarely at the feet of our council, for accepting the advice of the world’s leading scientists, in formulating policy on sea-level rise.
But something is wrong, terribly wrong.
I’ve just received my Notice of Valuation from the NSW Valuer General, and it includes a graph showing median sales values in the Eurobodalla Council area.
And they’re going up, not down!
Doesn’t the Valuer General know nothin’? Doesn’t he read the Bay Post? Listen to ABC radio South East? Hang out with the NSW Treasurer? Dip his toe in the ocean?
So we have to decide who to believe.
Cr Leslight and his carefully handcrafted graph, or the NSW Valuer General with his vast resources and statutory responsibilities.
