The news broke on Mr McClelland’s birthday when a friend called him to say they had voted for him.
Mr McClelland said he never thought he would be nominated for a Logie.
“I have to get enough votes for it to be an official nomination, but it’s nice to be included on the shortlist,” he said.
“It’s not something I had expected.”
Mr McClelland said it was “quite surreal” to see his name in a list alongside some of the greatest names in TV, as well as “good friends” who are nominated for the first time as well.
Having Anzac Girls, the ABC six-part series, nominated for an award also was pleasing.
“Anzac Girls was very special,” he said.
“To finally see the experiences and watch the stories of the nurses, the women of the Great War, was something I was quite proud to be a part of.
“It’s been inspiring to have people who have watched the show tell me that it’s led them to read the book by Peter Rees or do some research of their own.”
Mr McClelland is currently rehearsing for the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Sum-
mer, directed by Kip Williams.
Mr McClelland said both TV and theatre were as challenging and rewarding as the other.
“They just require a slightly different approach when it comes to your craft, as an actor,” he said.
“I always wanted to do both, and I hope I can continue to do both.”
In the future he hopes to be “doing good work with good people”.
“As an actor, that’s pretty much all you can hope for,” he said.
Over Christmas Mr McClelland spent time in Batemans Bay, where he grew up and where his family still lives.
